Eye of the Shaman

A Major New TalentEYE OF THE SHAMAN is a wonderful novel, which can be appreciated on many different levels: as a good story well-told, as a beautiful piece of writing, rich in exquisite descriptions and striking metaphors, and as a serious novel which grapples with philosophical and spiritual issues. The setting is 19th century New Zeeland. The novel follows the life of the tribal shaman Tui from his boyhood to his death. It tells melancholy tale of the colonization of New Zeeland by the English, and of the stuboorn and heroic, but ultimately doomed, resistance of the natives. But EYE OF THE SHAMAN does much more than merely chronicle and mourn the destruction of a traditional culture by Western colonialism. It seeks to console us in our loss by offering a philosophical perspective on history, and on the cosmos at large. Without giving away too much, I would characterize this perspective as "Dionysian" in Nietzsche's sense: One rises above the sorrows of life and history by ceasing to identify with one's self or one's culture, and instead identifying oneself with the whole of nature, which moves in an endless cycle of creation, destruction, and re-creation. We should not mourn the destruction of the past, because not only are all mortal things destined to perish, they are destined to return as well. EYE OF THE SHAMAN is a remarkably wise and mature work, and marks the emergence of a major new talent.
Eye of the Shaman: A Smashing Good ReadThe Eye of the Shaman is a beautifully crafted, vividly described tapistry of interwoven span of events throughout the life of an individual Mauri and his people at the time of their encounters with the white man, complete with an unexpected ending. Well paced, the plot commands the reader's attention, providing complex layers of interactions and insight. It is a tale of an individual attuned to nature and the universe, while simultaneously illustrating conficts between societies. It holds out both despair and hope for future generations. The book is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Campbell and one that he surely would embrace with enthusiasm. Highly recommend The Eye of the Shaman as a smashing good read.
Eye of the ShamanThis is an intensely spiritual book, not unlike the works of Herman Hesse. The author weaves his story through various states of consciousness: dreams, mystic insights, and near death experiences. The quality of the prose is superb. The author is a master of the English language. As a professor of philosophy, I found his metaphors about the ineffable nature of life to be profound. The final sequence lands like a blow to the solar plexis, followed by a knock out blow to the head. Absolutely incredible for a first novel!

Hmm...good!This was a good book, even though I had read this book about 2 years ago and have not read it again since. Besides this book, I have also read another book, 'It's first love, Jughead Jones' and both were great. I couldn't find any more Riverdale High books, but now I'll be able to read more, thanks to Amazon.com (Shopping Cart). I am so glad that Ronnie has made up her mind about the right boyfriend.

It's First Love Jughead Jones (Riverdale High, No 4)
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (December, 1991)
Average review score:

A True StorySticky was astonded when he realised that this was the life story of a porky guy he knew. Though he doesn't wear the crown anymore (now a G-Star cap), would rather eat sticky rice than hamburgers, he's still got that dopey look on his face. An instant classic
What's more intriguing is what the author didn't write.Betty and Veronica decide that Jughead needs a girlfriend and maneuver him into a blind date with a female super-athlete. Much of the book centres on how Jughead responds/retaliates. The book is fun to read, especially since the characters of Archie and Betty come off so vividly, but Michael Pellowski is so delicate with Jughead that it almost seems as if he's afraid of the character. He deliberately leaves us to guess what Jughead's true motives might be. He has also given the book a title which has little to do with the plot. What he writes is great 'Archie-ness' but what he doesn't write is more intriguing. I enjoyed the book mostly by finishing the author's apparent trail of thought long after the period or exclamation point. KV Wyli
